Social Network

There are tons of social networks ,such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. The differences among them are obviously. I'm not familiar with neither Facebook nor Twitter. There are some special social networks very popular in China. To be specific, QQ and Renren.

Other than Chinese and people living in China, I never heard about other people have QQ account. But QQ has the largest user group in China. QQ account seems like the second cell phone number. We leave message to friends, send documents online and discuss everything in QQ group. There are music, videos and TV shows for free. Also, we can invite our friends to play chess on QQ. I think the most exciting thing is I can invite my friend to enjoy the movie I am watching or the music I am listening to without download. Now, the most useful function to me is the free visual communication. It’s convenient for me to contact my family.

Another famous network is Renren which is especially popular among students. Renren is just the same with Facebook. We can find our friends, classmates, or anyone we want to know by searching their name on Renren and sending a request asking them to be friends on line. Also, the most basic function is we can post the photos and blogs and share information with our friends. Renren is a good place to know what is happening to our friends, where they went, what are they doing. Even we are living in different cities now, it’s easy for us keep our friendship even without hang out for a long time.

It doesn’t matter which network I’m using. Social network is like a bridge to me, connecting me and my friends. I’m growing up. I can’t stay at home with family and hang out with friends everyday. Everyone begins a new life in college, meets new people, makes new friends. Social networks are important for me to keep contact with my old friends and be familiar with new friends.

  1. I was very surprised to hear that while you have a QQ account (which I've only heard of for the first time recently), you aren't very familiar with Facebook. This comes as a bit of a shock to me as whenever I've met someone new, the question "Are you on Facebook?" inevitably arises to which the answer is "Yes, I'll add you". QQ does seem interesting though, especially the part about inviting your friend to watch the movie that you are watching.
I do agree that social networking is an important part of life now and makes it easier to stay in touch with family and friends. Differences in time zones and distance doesn't matter any more thanks to these websites.

  3. I think its very cool that you have other social networks from china rather than subscribing to the American ones. Really it makes complete sense. Also it makes sense that you do not have a facebook account, or even heard of facebook because facebook is blocked in China. While I was living in Shanghai is was a major pain to try to get on facebook all the time. I had to run a virtual private network in order to get on. But I totally understand and can connect with you when you say that these websites can help you keep in contact with family and friends back home. It was exactly what I had to do when I lived in China, and trying to talk to my friends back home in Indiana. If I did not have those websites I would have lost touch with friends entirely and when I moved back I would have had none to hang out with the entire summer. The video chat thing that you said QQ offers is awesome too because you feel like you can get your family on the video and get them right in your bedroom. Its a great feeling when you can talk with your loved ones and not feel like you are 7000 miles away. (ENGL106)

  4. It fascinated me when I first learned a few months ago that China has its own social networking sites and stays aloof from the ones that are popular globally. But with a population of 1.3 billion, these sites have a scope to grow to be popular enough.

I think QQ is a great idea. I would love to be able to watch a movie with a friend, or share my music interactively with a buddy. If the site was available in English I would definitely be inclined to check it out and recommend it.

I think I have seen Chinese versions of youtube as well. They are called called youku, tudou and 6rooms if I'm not mistaken. I would like to know which one you prefer and the reason for that preference.

  5. Although I would think you still maintain these profiles, I would think it is hard to update all three, now that you have gotten a facebook. I would think that you are having trouble keeping track of all them. When I look online I see that QQ doesn’t have an English counterpart, while Facebook does. I think it would be a good idea for QQ to start transferring over. For instance if you could would you start inviting your new friends at Purdue over to QQ, and your old friends from China to Facebook. In the future do you think one social network will win over the other.
